Looking to start a web design business?

Hi all,
I want to start my own web design business. There are some questions that are luring in my mind. I do have one or two clients to get started but how can I get more and spread my work to masses? How do I start designing for people? Do I need a site that displays my work, etc?

Yes you need a site. Yes you need portfolio. Yes you need business cards. Yes you need a business liecense and tax ID. Oh ya, one more thing... start up cash, and lots of it. The software alone will be $3-10k, and yes, you must own it. If you are found to have done the work with illegal downloads or you copied a friends cd, not only will the software companies sue you for everything you have and more but you clients can be sued and they will sue you back. Be ready to start this company with about $20k. Apple computers are used more than a PC so there goes $3-4k of that start up cash. My mother started her business just a few years ago and found it was hard, even with more than $20k, so be ready for lots of hard work.

First of all you should settle on a name for your business and design/build a simple portfolio site to showcase your work. More you expose your good work more there are chances to get clients. Starting a web design business comprises a lot of things, so before getting started make sure you are all equipped to get into it.

it would be good to get a website, first to display your talent in web design and also for a portfolio of your work, like a picture of each site you have done leading to the real site. Craigslist would be a good start to spread the word about your business, if your going to make it official as in incorporated, then your business should have a separate website then your portfolio. Ask around, if your in school as teachers or students who have jobs or dreams that they want to pursue, thats a great way to get work cause your right there, as you said you have 2 or 3 clients so you can start designing for them, if your more of the coder then the designer, its good to partner up with someone and work out money details with them, so they do they visionary work and you do the coding for the design which make the website.
