hey guys, what programs can i use to make map for source? i don't understand hammer and can't seem to do anythink with it, thanks

yeah, ive seen people use hammer, but i just don't like programs like that, i like to use things like sketchup and 3ds max

valve hammer editor (steam -> tools -> source sdk -> hammer editor)

you dont need anything else unless you wanna make models (xsi/3dsm/maya/...), textures (photoshop/gimp/...) and sounds (dunno any programs) yourself.
