[Tip] Shot-gunning

heyyo i've been looking through this forum as a newbie and i found that a lot of us seem to look down on the use of shotguns in CS.. and i'm doing this thread to give you some of my personal tips on becoming a good shot-gunner.. hope you'll appreciate it!

The shot-gun: In this thread, i am referring to the manual shotgun, or i heard some calling it 'shotty'... well anyway, i don't like the auto one because the recoil doesn't allow you to aim properly.

1) The shotgun, for myself, is used when i am seriously broke or just entered a server with a default of $2030, which is just enough for one shotgun. Some of the common views of the shot gun here:

a. only good for close range combats, or in smaller maps with tight corners
b. good firepower
c. long reloading time
d. poor damage at long range

Yupp. here's point two.
2) The shotgun does not SUCK at long range, unless you are talking abt ultra long ones like awp_india or sth; but for use in medium maps like de_dust or de_dust2, they work perfectly fine. Some tips on using the shotgun for long range:

a. try to aim higher towards the head when shooting as you will have a higher chance of hitting his head: the shot-gun's trump card.

b. Because your enemy is probably armed with a fairly good weapon like the AK or M4A1, you will want to hop and crouch arnd. Be as agile as possible for him to waste time on aiming for you. While he does that, you just need to pump 2 or 3 shots into him, and down he goes. (of course. if your opponent is too pro i can't say anything, can i? )

c. The main thing for shotguns in long range is to try your best in aiming for the head. It's your best chance for survival.

3) Yes the shotgun takes quite some time to reload, but each of its 8 bullets is adequate to kill one person, so do AIM well before you shoot, just don't take too long. So reload as much as you can, after every shot you make. In some cases, this reloading style might serve you well. Take this scenario:

Your opponent shoots all his bullets of M4A1 at you, and you are out of bullets for your shotgun too. Chances are, you will kill him first. He will take a longer time to reload his entire cartridge than you do for just ONE bullet that is enough to take him down. Even if he does use his pistol, you will take in about 20 to 50 damage only before he is dead. (with the exception of the deagle which can kill you in 2 shots)


4) Try to get as close to your opponent as possible. For instance, i was playing de_dust2 just 15 minutes ago, and i brought down 4 guys with my shotgun as the only terrorist left. How? I could have just taken the bomb lying in the tunnel leading to A, but i took my time. Waited for them to come to me first. And when they did that, i just had to walk straight into them and pump 8 bullets into them, one by one. I said shotguns are pretty good in long range, but they are best suited for close to medium range, do not forget.

5) Want to use the shotgun? Sure, but you need the guts to use it. You must be willing to die the earliest, or be the one that takes the most damage and be the one that is left with 3 hp at the end. The shotgun requires you to be daring. A person who has a shotgun and doesn't go all out is better off as someone who only has a knife. And i mean, if you buy the shot gun, you only have a few reasons for doing so.

a. you dont have enough money.
b. you've just read this thread and you wanna try some of it out xD
c. you accidentally bought it
d. you are blood-thirsty.

For point a, if you already bought the shotgun with like an initial amt of $2030, you will be left with less than $900. What is there to lose? Just bring down as many enemies as you can with you! I mean, one down equals $300. And if you win, you get more than $1500.

The rest of the reasons are just crap i thought of xD

Hope you do not mind me adding to this.. But i am a pretty good shotty ( got 3 aces in a scrim due to shotty ), Yes the Manual shotty i find to be the best has a great amount of power... but as said in long range it is not good. I suggest if you want to be using a shotgun to Buy a deagle a deagle is good for long range and shotty well.. that will most of the time kill 1 hit if you are close enough.. I dunno I just wanted to post my personal thoughts on a good shotty player
