7.0 Conclusion

1.0 Hardware and Cvars:

-1.1 Computer specifications.

For Counter - Strike 1.6 you will need minimal hardware specs. Most computers from the last 10 years can play CS without too much trouble.

Valve recommends this:
Quote:
Minimum: 500 mhz processor, 96mb ram, 16mb video card, Windows 2000/XP, Mouse, Keyboard, Internet Connection

Recommended: 800 mhz processor, 128mb ram, 32mb+ video card, Windows 2000/XP, Mouse, Keyboard, Internet Connection
As you can see these are merely basic things needed.

If you want no FPS lag you are going to want around 1.5 Ghz processor, 512MB ram and 512MB video card. An 8800 is pretty good. This should ensure that you arent losing needed FPS.

Windows XP is the fastest operating system to use for gaming and you should always choose it. If you dont have it you can get it pretty cheap or Windows 7 is quite fast aswell. Vista is a ram and memory sucker that you should try to stay away from.

-1.3 Optional hardware and peripherals.

Now, as Valve has said you need a Mouse and Keyboard. This is an FPS game which means that you aim with your mouse and move with the keyboard.

A good mouse is optional but is highly recommended. You can bind extra commands to extra buttons for easier access. I recommend a Logitech G5 for a decent price.

A good keyboard is highly optional. If you have all the keys that dont stick, GREAT! You may choose a Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard for the customization features.

Sound can make or break your Counter-Strike career. A good sound card is a must. Also a good headset.

A great headset is the Beyerdynamic DT234 but it is quite expensive or Medusa NX 5.1 .

-1.5 FPS Cvars.

The Counter-Strike console is full of things called Cvars. Cvars is short for Console Variables. Console Variables have a value set to them for example: fps_max 101

Inside of your Counter-Strike game press the '`' key and you can write these in. If it doesnt come up go into options, click on Advanced and turn on developer console.

For Frames Per Second there arent that many cvars that help too much. Write these in:

developer 1
fps_max 101
cl_showfps
cl_vsmoothing 0.0
gl_ztrick 1

-1.7 Ping/Rate Cvars.

Rates control your latency (ping). Latency is the time it takes for information to come from your computer, to the server and back. Your latency goes up when you lag. You are wanting to have it as low as you can.

If you are on a low or capped speed you are going to want something like:

rate 6000
cl_updaterate 15
cl_cmdrate 15

If you are on a standard broadband connection
rate 15000
cl_updaterate 60
cl_cmdrate 60

If you are on a faster broadband connection
rate 25000
cl_updaterate 101
cl_cmdrate 101

Another thing you are wanting to set is the ex_interp .1

These rates might not work for everyone so sorry.

2.0 Binds:

-2.4 General keybinds.

Keybinds are when you bind an action to a key for example If I press the letter 'X' I might have set it to shoot, not that you'd want that!

These are my keybinds a lot of them are the same as the default settings:
Quote:
bind "TAB" "+showscores"
bind "ENTER" "+attack"
bind "ESCAPE" "cancelselect"
bind "SPACE" "+jump"
bind "'" "+moveup"
bind "+" "sizeup"
bind "," "buyammo1"

bind "t" "impulse 100"
bind "u" "messagemode2"
bind "w" "+forward"
bind "x" "+voicerecord"
bind "y" "messagemode"
bind "z" "radio1"
bind "~" "toggleconsole"
bind "DOWNARROW" "+back"
bind "LEFTARROW" "+left"
bind "RIGHTARROW" "+right"
bind "ALT" "+strafe"
bind "CTRL" "+duck"
bind "SHIFT" "+speed"
bind "F1" "defuser;hegren;secammo;"
bind "F2" "deagle;secammo;"
bind "F3" "mp5;primammo;hegren;"
bind "F4" "ak47;m4a1;deagle;flash;hegren;primammo;secammo;ve sthelm;"
bind "F5" "awp;deagle;hegren;sgren;primammo;secammo;vesthelm ;double_flash;"
bind "F6" "save quick"
bind "F7" "load quick"
bind "F10" "quit prompt"
bind "INS" "+klook"
bind "PGDN" "+lookdown"
bind "PGUP" "+forward"
bind "END" "centerview"
bind "MWHEELDOWN" "+duck"
bind "MWHEELUP" "+jump"
bind "MOUSE1" "+attack"
bind "MOUSE2" "+attack2"
bind "MOUSE3" "+pokeskill"
bind "PAUSE" "pause"
They are mainly the same. The differences are F1 - F5 are buy keybinds, Mouse wheel up is jump, mouse wheel down is crouch, f is hook and t is flashlight.

-2.7 Buy keybinds.

These are my buy keybinds:

Quote:
bind "F1" "defuser;hegren;secammo;"
bind "F2" "deagle;secammo;"
bind "F3" "mp5;primammo;hegren;"
bind "F4" "ak47;m4a1;deagle;flash;hegren;primammo;secammo;ve sthelm;"
bind "F5" "awp;deagle;hegren;sgren;primammo;secammo;vesthelm ;double_flash;"
I use these because F1 = CT first round in a war. F2 = T first round.

F3 Is my version of an MP5 set.

F4 Is my basic AK47/Colt M4 set.

F5 is AWP set.

3.0 Starting Out:

-3.4 Finding a Server.

To find a server in CS1.6 Steam you need to open up Counter-Strike and press on Find Servers.

Now at the bottom of that screen you are going to want to do is press on the Options button. Click on "All" and change to your country. Close the options tab and click on "Refresh All" now find a nice sounding server and open it up. On the right side of the screen is the latency and players. You're going to want one with not full players, and a latency of less then 500 or so.

There! You're in your first game of Counter-Strike

-3.7 Learning The Ropes.

First out you're going to notice the two teams Terrorists and Counter Terrorists. The Terrorists can have either one of 2 default objectives. de_ maps are maps that have bomb sites that the Terrorists will try to plant the bomb to destroy a target. There are 2 bombsites on a de_ map. cs_ Maps are the maps with hostages the Terrorists want to stop the Counter Terrorists from rescuing the hostages. The hostages can be saved by pressing the use or 'E' button and then lead them out to the extract point of the map.

Default Re: CS1.6 Ultimate Guide| v0.5

4.0 Kills:

-4.2 Recoil and Spread.

In every FPS game are things named Recoil and Bullet Spread. In Counter-Strike each gun has a different program for Recoil and Spread. Some guns have max recoil but little spread, some have max spread AND recoil and so on.

The main gun for Terrorists is the AK47 and the Counter Terrorist equivalent is the Colt or M4A1. These have great power with lower recoil and spread.

To reduce recoil and spread crouching is the best option. Crouching while shooting will make sure that your bullets will be closer together. Tap-shooting is another option. To tap-shoot you use your mouse to burst out 3 or 4 bullets with a slight stop then shooting again. It minimizes the recoil if you combine these two things.

Tap-shooting works on the run but it still wont be as effective as crouching. Whenever you are staying still to shoot always crouch.

You can check out how much recoil and spread you are going to get by looking at your crosshair. The bigger it is the less accurate.

-4.4 Head and Body shots.

BOOM HEADSHOT!

This is what you want to hear while playing. To get more headshots read the above article to reduce the recoil and bullet spread then aim just a tiny bit under the head, around the neck. This is where the hitbox is for headshots. Headshots hit over 100 and usually kill people with one bullet. Keep your crosshair up around head height for easy collision headshots. Pistols are great for aiming for headshots as they have the best accuracy and as they are semi-automatic easier to aim. The deagle is the least accurate of all the pistols but is the most powerful. The USP has been nicknamed the headshot pistol as it is accurate, fast and quite powerful.

Rifles are great for body shots as they will pay great damage and are fast. Use these for mid-range combat.

Body shots are the shots you will be wanting to aim for if you cant headshot a person. Body shots are expensive for the opponents health and can quickly kill someone with a burst from a colt or AK.

Legs and arms are what you should be staying away from. They cause the least damage and you will give out bullets and time to the opponent to reply with.

-4.6 Gun Handling.

As stated above, every gun has a different pattern of recoil and spread and how you control it is how you can play the game. Getting use to every gun is good for knowing every occasion. Tap-shooting works for all automatic guns. Aiming can be used with semi-automatic or the powerful burst of the Famas. The Famas is an underrated gun that can cause serious damage and kill a player in one deadly burst if he aims at the head.

-4.8 Wallbang.

Wallbang is when somebody puts bullets into a wall. Almost every wall is penetrable by bullets in Counter-Strike. Using your sound you can pin-point a players position to kill them through the wall. This is very effective and should be used when you know people are there. Spam spots will be covered later in this guide. Spam spots is where they spam bullets into a place where people could be. It is not always a certain death but it can work.

5.0 Avoiding Death:

-5.3 Cover.

Using walls or crates is a way to avoid death. If you avoid death it opens up more options for killing people. To make kills you have to be alive. As mentioned by the section above almost all walls are penetrable by bullets, BUT, using cover it can shield you from the main force of damage. Using a cover successfully means you can keep upto 50% of your body shielded from the full force of bullets but exposing enough of yourself to put bullets into your opponent. Well placed cover can be the point of whether you win or lose a match.

To provide yourself with cover there are 3 ways the first is full-bodied cover. This is where none of your body is showing. The next is the shooting cover. This is where your gun is showing so you can shoot people coming your way. The last is the crouch down cover. This is where you can shoot standing up and also be under cover.

-5.6 Jumping.

Killed out in a Steam Game update recently, Jumping used to be a great part of avoiding death. You used to be able to bunnyhop around the map gaining speed and continually bouncing. Now, while it may not be very good, it can work. Jumping is a way to get out of the line of fire and out of the way. Use mouse wheel up to jump to make it faster to jump.

-5.9 Teammates.

Teammates can be great while avoiding death. Stay with them and help out. A less-honourable part of CS is baiting. Baiting is when a player lets the terrorist attack them and run back to their team for the terrorist to die.

6.0 Maps:

-6.3 Getting to know your maps.

Play the war maps often, de_dust2, de_nuke, de_inferno etc. learn them and learn your playing style. Simple universal setups include the AK/AWP which is a Terrorist formation of:

Player 1: AK, Deagle
Player 2: AK, Glock
Player 3: AK, Deagle
Player 4: AK, Deagle
Player 5: AWP, Deagle

Player 2 and 5 swap every round to make sure they have enough money.

Play them in single player check out all the spots you havent noticed before.

-6.5 Camping Spots

Check where people camp then shoot through the wall there if you think someone is there. Unload a mag on it if you are so sure. Camping as a Counter Terrorist is great at bomb sites. Set up a crossfire for people to slow down the Terrorists and stop the bomb.

-6.7 Custom Maps

People can make custom maps which you can download online or download during the connection to the game. Some you should download are:

de_cpl_strike
de_cpl_mill
de_tuscan

These are typical war maps that leagues and people use.

7.0 Conclusion:

Thanks for taking the time to read this and hope it helps.
