I think that 1.6 for competitive play and source just for the fun. I haven't played the other versions so I can't really say.

In my opinion and after playing all three current version of Counter-Strike, 1.6 beats them all; it has a far greater history & fanbase behind it, There is around 50,000 Counter-Strike 1.6 servers despite valve constantly breaking this number by releasing server crippling updates. CZ has several thousand servers at the most, Source however still has less game servers for it even if you add on all the game servers from other Source engine games.

Source = Total crap gameplay, maps feel small, hitboxes are crap, guns feel crap when you shoot. Only thing in which source is better than 1.6 is the graphics.

1.6 = Requirred lots of skill. Interesting and demanding gameplay.
