Why would I want a server

Yeah, stupid question really. However, in the past I have had a CS:S server and it was really good, now I don't have it and I miss it. However, I really never used it, it was a private server and only used it when my friends were online to frag. My real question is, how to populate a public server (which is what I am thinking about)?

I suppose if I had a server with people that play often, it would be even better.

There's lots of people on these forums that have popular servers, and they would be the ideal persons to ask about how to make your server popular. Some ideas:

Be kind to your visitors
Play popular maps (custom maps, etc)
Install fun mods (gun game, wc3 mod, etc)
Have mature admins
Further customize your server and have a web site with forums so your regulars can become a cohesive community.

if you plan on making your server popular you have to remember there are thousands of other servers. try to make yours stand out. maybe go to websites and post your server ip there.

1. the first thing ppl see is the server name....make it stand out include mod names, tickrates, what kind of maps the server plays, fast dls
2. Amount of ppl playing...never make bots people might have the server list filtered
3. maps
4. Latency
