I have to agree with Mr.Bob , for CS:S the Video Graphic card and RAM helps you run your game with out lag , but internet connection and network speed plays a big one in this one( i have experienced it on my self , i used to have Charter but i had lag spikes like every 2 min. I switched to AT&T no more lag spikes nothing game runs smooth and perfect)
Just if anyone wonders i have dual core Intel possessor , nVidia 8800 GTS(G92) 512MB , and 4 GB of RAM. So it defiantly was the internet connection problem that made me lag spike, not performance of my machine.

maybe ask your family member to turn off their computer while you're playing, I have the same problem, it's something that does with your bandwidth

and no, ram would have no effect from 2-4 GB no effect, a lot of RAM is ONLY needed for server computers
