dedicated box?

You need:

1 - A server (a high powered computer)
2 - A very high speed connection with both high speed upload and download
3 - Enough knowledge about running a hlds dedicated server to keep your players happy

I believe Counter-Strike.com is going to begin selling dedicated servers pretty soon, which I would recommend over buying your own server and high speed connection (cable modem/dsl isn't fast enough).

If you can't afford to rent a server every month you won' be able to afford to start up a business....

You can't expect to instantly make all your money back from starting a business and make profits and be able to run your own server for free. The first year (or couple of years) after a business starts they arn't expected to turn a profit. The rule of thumb is to have enough money beforehand to run the business for a 12 months with little to no profit.

no no. see, i dont want to start a server company. i want to run 1 or 2 servers formyself, without renting them. so far iv found out only 1 thing i need..

I know, I was replying to hunter....

As far as what else you need abbynormal stated them all. If you get a T1 connection (which to run 2 servers you might as well just rent them... its going to cost you a several hundred, the cheapest I have ever seen is $400), you need a very good computer (good processor, a couple gigs of memory, a good otherboard..... the good thing is a 20 gig hard drive is more then enough space, and you don't need a graphics card). Then your set to install the dedicated server.
