How do you get a fan base?

How do you get people to join your server and keep coming back so you can constantly have a full server with people playing? I just purchased a server yesterday and I'm getting lonley playing with only a couple of friends at a time. How do i get people to join my server!?!?!

Advert is the keyword here. Have a website with more than a server ip on it. Have a forum, information on something. Try and keep people coming to server. Like have mods or new maps, that no other server has. There are lots of ways to keep people going to a server. You have to find a good mix of them. Too much is a bad thing too. Like waiting 10 mins to download a map from a server, I normal exit them.

Ya, one thing that is definently a turn off is downloading... sounds or maps... just keep in mind whenever you add sounds, it might not seem like a lot when you add them, especially if you do it over a long period of time... but if its a first time user, they have to download all of them for any mod or addon that is in use

well i have all the basics... quake sounds... and play basic maps. And counter-strike.com provides a very good server with very good ping. I'm just having problem getting people to come.... i know it takes time, but any other tips?

perhaps off limited admin slot to those who play often, or reserved slots so people have a place they can always play. Mods like RPG mod or Warcraft get people coming back as well
