Computer Freezes Up Durring Game Play

I been playing steam games for over a year on my comp, and recently my Steam completely freezes up and locks up my computer. I can't even CTRL+ALT+DELETE. I have to manually reset my computer. It just started doing this to me about 3 weeks ago.

I am running Intel Core 2 Due E6300 @ 1.86Ghz
mobo: Nvidia nforce 780i
ram: 2 Gb DDR2
gcard: Nvidia GeForce 7950 gtx

I have my computer case off, cause i thought it might be over heating or something. But i can't figure out why my comp system freezes. It happens once in a while, maybe 5 mins into a game, or even a few hrs in.

Any suggestions?

OS = XP.


My buddy has the same exact system as me, except only 1 g of ram and a asus mobo and does not feeze up

Are you playing the same servers as he is? What ping are you seeing once you join a server?

Have you run a virus scan on the computer, maybe a disk clean up and defrag?

My ping is between 25-75. So its not my internet connection cause we are on the same LAN.

And i just reformatted my whole comp so i got no viruses on it...

still can't figure out why i am freezing up


only thing i can think of is overhearting, but hard to tell
