Internet failure problem master server connection

When I try to connect to the Internet servers for Counter-Strike 1.6, it says "Getting server list...." and then "Could not contact master game server to retrieve game list." I can now only play LAN at home . I think that the internet servers worked before but now there's nothing. My internet connection is fine and all firewalls are off. I think it might just be the program. I am running off vista on an IBM notebook. I will need some help soon!!!

1: Laptops are not meant to play games. Even if you can get the servers your notebook will get hot fast and crash. It always does.

2: Delete the clientregistry.blob and steamclient.dll files from your base Steam folder. This is Steams answer but may not fix it. Steam + Vista = trouble.

3: The master server can take minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, or years to load. It depends on traffic and your number in line. I have seen servers never load and severs that load in seconds.

1: This could be right, I hate Vista anyway, but the others...

2: I am not using steam. I have installed Counter-strike from a friend which contained only the installer for counter-strike. This couldn't be a problem because the games could be seen at some point in time before it didn't work.

3: My server FINISHES loading, still saying that it cannot connect to the master server. I cannot actually see the servers there, let alone use them.


I would highly appreciate a reply for this.

So this is a Non-Steam version?

If you don't have Steam you will never connect to the Steam server list.
