I agree.. Steam hasn't been a positive thing in my mind. However, there sn't a actual fix or update. You can try to reinstall steam, you can try to get it to run in a lower version of DirectX, you can install a legal copy of Windows XP or an older operating system. It's really about all you can do. There are a few articles that are on the Steam support pages on how to force Steam to run your games with an older DX level. They start at 7 and go to the newsest version.

Sorry, Steam has to update, there's no off button. You could just not connect to the internet and play only lan games, that's about it.

is the issue here to do with the directx? or with vista? because if it is vista then i'll use windows xp. though my friends have no issue with vista and steam

Probably Vista since it has been known to cause problems with Steam.

imo steam is the one which should be scolded. vista and directx running smoothly, but steam is just a failure at all... and the worst is, that they even don't care about it.

Hello

Just thought I should tell you that I have the very same problem and I use Win XP so it's not a Vista problem.

Couldn't find a solution so far.

I managed to play 2 or 3 times by shutting staem down and deleting these files on steam folder:

Steam.dll
SteamUI.dll
ClientRegistry.Blob

Then I opened steam again and let it update once again.
As I said, this worked for 2, maybe 3 times but no longer does anything and I get stuck on the 3rd bar of "Establishing network connexion to server".

Anyone found a solution yet?

okay i found a solution for my problem. it's caused by Internet download manager. download accelerators have an issue with steam. so delete them and steam works fine. hope this helps.

but now i have an issue with cl_flushentitypacket.....
