You will need to get a ftp program. I personally use a program called leapFTP for all my ftp needs. (You can get a free trial)...

If you want a free one, there are a few good ones, smartftp and filezilla are pretty good.

Now to know exactly how to install a mod, you will need to find the specific instructions. Most come with a readme, or have a webpage with the instructions.

Also, make sure you have the ingame console available (options > advanced > check the box to enable console). This will be how you make changes ingame to the server, and perform operations like kick, changemap, etc (You can get a mod called mani-mod which will give you a GUI interface instead of having to type text commands)
