for me it's always either the shotgun when i'm out of money or the awp when i am loaded. Sometimes i screw up with awp though, because i need to have the umm... kick to kill ppl with it
but the shotty is pretty good for all ranges: that is, if you are lucky haha.
For the manual shotgun, it is good at close range because you just need to click once and blast the guy's head (or guys) for that matter. Medium range is pretty good too, especially when you are playing against not so good players, because they start to panic when they see their life slowly depleting and will lose control of their aiming. So you can slowly kill them from there with about 3 or 4 shots.
As for long range, the shotgun is not very effective but if you are lucky, you might just get one or two headshots from the scattering of the bullets. Yuppp.
